24 March

In Mulhouse, to the Schlumpf Collection, aka Cité de l’Automobile … an art gallery in my mind.

It’s immense and it’s art deco and it has the largest assortment of Bugattis in the world – a kind of heaven for some.

After a morning spent wandering around the priceless exhibits, the only reasonable thing to do is head to the cafe for a lunchtime beer and a slice of tarte aux pommes … to ponder over whether the transfer of ‘ownership’ of this quite awesome collection to the state is a sad tale or a victory for the general public.

In the afternoon I head back to the centre-ville, via the canal path and through an enormously long series of concrete tunnels with no signs of life but lots of entertaining grafitti.

In the city, anything’s possible.

Even a tour of Europe.
